Genshin Impact Hit with $20 Million Fine

Cognosphere, better known as HoYoverse—the publisher behind Genshin Impact—has agreed to pay a $20 million fine to settle allegations of violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) accused the company of collecting personal data from children under 13 and misleading users about in-game purchases and loot box odds.

Under the settlement, players under 16 will now need parental consent to make in-game purchases. The FTC also claimed Cognosphere's purchasing system was deliberately confusing, obscuring the real costs of loot boxes and rare items.

While the publisher denies most of the allegations, calling them "inaccurate," they have agreed to comply with the settlement terms. Moving forward, Genshin Impact will block loot box purchases by players under 16 without explicit parental approval.
