Avowed Is Here!

Obsidian’s Avowed marks a return to their RPG roots, delivering a fantasy adventure set in the Pillars of Eternity universe. It’s packed with all the genre staples: campfire bonding sessions, tragic backstories, and looting every corpse in sight. The game nails world-building and character writing, trademarks of Obsidian’s pedigree, while offering satisfying spell-slinging combat against skeletons and lizard folk. But let’s address the elephant in the room, it doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel.

IGN gave it a 7/10, calling it "perfectly competent" but criticized its lack of boldness. There’s charm in its familiar systems, like meaningful decisions and loot progression, but it’s a "by-the-numbers" RPG. The Verge highlighted its strong narrative design, saying player choices felt impactful. Meanwhile, Eurogamer awarded it 4 stars, praising its depth and charm, though noting its old-fashioned feel and lack of groundbreaking ideas.

Ultimately, Avowed feels like comfort food for RPG fans, deep, engaging, and fun, but playing it safe in a genre that thrives on evolution.
